360° product display

I’ve had this idea for a while now,  and finally got around to trying it when I found an unused rotating cheese tray at my mom’s. We bought it at IKEA a long time ago, but never really used it, so now I claimed it. The cool thing about this cheese tray is that it rotates really well with surprisingly little wobble, considering the bearing size vs. total diameter. (about 40 cm, which is just perfect for me)

I spray-painted the top surface white, and took measurements of the circumference by applying painter’s tape all around the profile. Then laid the tape out on my table and measured 36 equal parts.

Then I stuck the tape around the tray again and copied the marks to the profile of the board. This gives me a perfect 10° between each mark.

And here’s a quick setup for a first test. I used a screw as a pointer and made 1 mark thicker as starting reference.

The objective is to make a decent lightbox, because lighting really sucked in this test.

So… Photoshop to the rescue! But off course it would be better to start with good lighting in the first place! I set my Gopro at a 5 second interval, perfect for me to manually rotate to the next mark in between pictures. I do plan to automate this process in the future, but as it is now it only took me a couple of minutes anyway…

Well, without further ado, here’s some results. Click + drag to rotate:
