Newest tool in the shop

A few days ago, a forum user over at shapeoko.com posted an idea I just had to try out. He had bought some kind of table saw, but instead of a circular blade, it had a jigsaw mounted underneath (as seen in the picture above). The advantage of this thing is that it is very fast in cutting profile tabs. I have always used my dremel to do this, which worked fine to a degree, but the circular blade – even a small dremel one – does not allow cutting in tight spots. On the other hand, my small bandsaw can address tight corners , but you can’t reach enclosed tabs without sawing through your workpiece.

So this tool could actually be pretty useful, and since I had an old jigsaw that I didn’t use anymore, I decided to try it out. There wasn’t much planning involved. I sawed a slit in my desk, and then used the jigsaw to widen it to match the blade’s profile. I screwed it into the underside of my table, with a zip-tie keeping the power switch pressed down. Simple and effective.

Having tested it just now, I already see that it will be used a lot, but maybe I should replace the coarse saw blade with a more gentle profile one. Because right now it is way overpowered and biting too aggressively into the wood.
