Guitar wall hanger (2) – Finished!

This project is not an original design. Well not by me anyway… The original hangers I bought can be found here.

I am attempting to make my own because they were quite expensive, and my 8-string guitar does not fit in them anyway.

Remember the mold I made a while back? I recently bought some veneer so I could finally finish this project. I started by pre-forming the sheets. No glue, steam or whatever was involved in this step. I just took it very slowly, ramping up the pressure over time until they fit inside the mold.

Now that the veneer sheets were somewhat bent to shape, I glued everything together and applied as much clamping pressure as I could. In order to also apply perpendicular pressure, I hammered a wedge into the top slit.

After the glue dried, I cleaned up the edges so I had a better grasp of what I was working with. I have to say it was showing much promise already! I put it in the mold again for a couple of hours just because I noticed the glue hadn’t fully cured yet.

I printed my templates on adhesive paper so I could easily cut out the shapes on my bandsaw. I made two separate templates: the first being an exact copy of the original wall hanger, and the second being a wider version that will accept my 8-string guitar. I must say I have gotten so used to having access to CNC machines that it felt a bit unnatural doing some manual woodworking for a change ;-).

The finishing touch was off course a leather protecting piece. It took some time getting it where I wanted it to be, but I managed to fold and glue it in place anyway. I think I’ll make a jig just for that if I decide to make some more of these guitar hangers (which I probably will).

So here it is in all its glory:

Since the guitar is still pretty close to the wall, the load force isn’t as high as you might suspect. The plywood seems to keep its shape very well. For now at least ;-).

To cap it off, here’s a side-by-side comparison between the original and the wide version:
