Egg slicer restoration (1)

Over a year ago I bought this egg slicer on a flea market in my city. I don’t really need an egg slicer if I’m being completely honest, but I liked the vintage looking design, and it cost next to nothing, so… YOLO bitches.

As you can see the aluminium pieces originally must have had a chrome finish. It had obviously seen better days, so I decided to sandblast and refinish it. Chrome isn’t really my thing, and considering the slicer needs to be food-safe, powdercoating seemed to be my best bet.

I’ve had my powder coating set for a while now, but I kept procrastinating this job for some reason. But no more! I masked some parts with high-temperature tape and finally got to it.

I don’t know what happened exactly but let’s say things didn’t go as planned…

Either my oven is going way too high in temperature (it’s a little grill oven without temperature setting) or the tape is rubbish. Considering I ordered the tape from China I’m betting the latter…

Oh well, sandblaster to the rescue!

On the second try I didn’t mask anything at all. I did not set my house on fire this time, but I’m still not 100% satisfied with the result. There are little bubbles that I need to get rid of. Maybe the part wasn’t 100% clean? Maybe I used too much powder? Maybe the oven IS too hot after all? I guess I’ll have to experiment to find out.

If you hadn’t figured it out by now, I am going for the Iron Man colorway. The gold is okay I guess but the red pops too much for my liking. If I decide to give this another try, I’ll add some black so it becomes a much more subtle (and accurate) burgundy.
