As you may have noticed in the site header, I finally designed a logo! It’s been on my to-do list since forever, but I just kept procrastinating… On the other hand, choosing a symbol to represent your brand is an important decision, and although I’ve had lots of ideas over the years, none of them seem to have stuck long enough to really be decisive.
So finally there is a logo, but what is it about?
I found inspiration in an ancient Norse symbol, called a ‘Valknut’: which consists of three interlocked triangles. It supposedly represents slain warriors and has also been linked to the ‘End of the world’. So thematically it ties in neatly with the ‘Man Made Mayhem’ name.
Furthermore, the letters ‘M’ and ‘A’ are clearly distinguishable three times, mirrorring the website’s name alliteration. Note that I’ve always liked three-way symmetry in logo’s. In this instance one could even say it links back to the three-dimensionality of the work I do.
I linked the triangles into one loop (similar to a möbius loop) and stylized the logo even further in order to make it visually more interesting.
Another consideration is that I needed the logo to be as simple as possible, yet easily recognizable. In the near future, I plan to make a branding iron to mark my work (discarding the endgrain texture off course). So in light of making my life a lot easier; less is definitely more 😉
