Rabbit Pen

I’ve been thinking about keeping a couple of rabbits for a while, and during the lockdown I finally had the time to start building a pen. I had a small strip of grass which I didn’t really have a use for, and needed regular upkeep, which was a drag. It has both sun and shade so it was an ideal spot.

I bought the rabbit hutch as a kit, and built all the rest myself.

At this point, I already had a good base, but I wanted some more padding for the rabbits’ entertainment. I started by building a second smaller shelter with another nesting spot on top. I also put a duct tunnel around it which they really seem to love.

Sadly, during the first week, one of the rabbits managed to escape already. People say rabbits are escape artists, and in my experience that’s no exaggeration. It seemed the fence was too low, so what does a man with a cnc do?

I designed and carved some fence extensions. But instead of just going higher, I made them at an angle so that the rabbits would not be able to climb the fence anymore.

If they can’t go over, they try going under. πŸ˜‰ Obviously rabbits like to dig holes, and at first I just let them. But I noticed they were going really deep and I had no control over where they would end up, so I ended up covering the whole surface area with fence netting.

I noticed they like to climb the hutch roof, so I added a small platform for their convenience. And last but not least, a slide! (which they don’t use at all) πŸ™‚
